The Eyes Have It

Kerri Vilaverde

My cosmetics obsession is anything to do with lashes.  I like products that lengthen and lift those lashes to new heights.  After all, the eyes are the window to the soul right? And I want people to SEE me.  I remember when I heard my first commercial for prescription eyelash lengthening medication.  I was intrigued. Like many drugs, it came about as an accident. A side effect for glaucoma patients using prescription eye drops was a lengthening of their lashes.  It can also change the color of your eyelids and eyes. (No thanks. I’ll keep my hazel peepers.) And in some patients, a swelling of the retina and blurred vision were reported.  The side effects were too much for me, and I assume also the cost, to consider pursuing.

Quickly afterward, it seems like every cosmetics company came out with a serum or treatment in an attempt to grab a bit of that market.  It’s been a few years now and these serums continue to be popular. The problem? They, too, are filled with some scary stuff. In researching this blog post, I reviewed the serums I do have, yes I should have done this before, and some of the most popular sellers on Amazon.  And you know what I learned? They are EXPENSIVE, some of them retail for as much as $150 a tube, the reviews are mixed, and many people have reported scary side effects.

I came across an interesting article on The Cut explaining the science.  In order to actually create longer growth, a serum would have to create “a hormonal effect”.  Just those words are scary. I have enough “hormonal effects” already, thank you very much. Sorry folks.  Just not going to lie to you. These types of serums aren’t going to make your lashes grow longer than your DNA dictates.

I’ve determined that using a natural lash conditioner seems to be the way to go.  The most commonly recommended oil for lashes is castor oil. The ricinoleic acid in castor oil may make the lashes grow in faster after shedding.  Coconut oil (seriously, is there anything you can’t use coconut oil for?), almond oil, and vitamin e also seem to be popular. You can use these to fortify your lashes and help prevent breakage.  That can make them appear more voluminous, thicker, glossier, healthier, and dare I say…. younger. Like the difference between your hair without conditioner and after your favorite treatment.

Here’s a recipe to try.  You will want to apply this with a spoolie and take care NOT to get it in your eyes.

  • 1 drop each of lavender essential oil and rosemary essential oil. Both believed to promote hair growth.
  • 1 teaspoon castor oil
  • ½ teaspoon sweet almond oil or coconut oil

Apply at bedtime and wash off in the morning.  Discontinue if you notice any irritation. And as always, when in doubt, consult your doctor or ophthalmologist.  We want you to be safe and healthy.
