Teen Skincare Doesn’t Have to Be Complicated: Meet Herbal Teen

If you have a tween or teen, chances are skincare has suddenly become a topic of conversation in your house. Between social media trends, elaborate multi-step routines, and shelves filled with products promising perfect skin, figuring out what young skin actually needs can feel overwhelming.

The good news? Teen skincare doesn't have to be complicated.

As a pharmacist, skincare formulator, and mom, I believe one of the best places to start is with the basics: gentle cleansing and appropriate moisture.

That philosophy is exactly why I created Herbal Teen, Kosmatology's new two-step skincare routine formulated specifically for oily and acne-prone tween and teen skin.

Why Does Teen Skin Change?

Puberty brings hormonal changes that can cause the sebaceous glands to produce more oil. That extra oil, combined with dead skin cells and everyday buildup, can contribute to clogged pores and breakouts.

The natural reaction is often to try to get rid of as much oil as possible.

But squeaky-clean doesn't necessarily mean healthy skin.

Harsh cleansers, excessive washing, scrubs, and using too many products at once can leave the skin feeling dry, tight, or irritated. That's why I prefer starting teens with a simple, consistent routine rather than introducing multiple products all at once.

Does Oily Skin Really Need Moisturizer?

Yes!

This is probably one of the biggest misconceptions I hear about oily skin. When your skin already feels oily, adding moisturizer can seem completely counterintuitive.

But oil and moisture aren't the same thing.

Cleansing removes dirt, oil, sweat, and other buildup from the skin. Following cleansing with a lightweight moisturizer helps provide the moisture skin needs without requiring a thick or heavy cream.

The key is choosing products appropriate for oily skin and using the right amount.

Introducing Herbal Teen

I wanted Herbal Teen to give tweens, teens, and their parents an easy place to start.

No 10-step routine. No bathroom counter filled with products.

Just:

STEP 1 ✨ CLEANSE

Herbal Teen Face Wash is a gentle foaming cleanser created for oily and acne-prone skin. It removes dirt, excess oil, and everyday buildup without leaving skin feeling stripped.

The formula features lemongrass, rosemary, and lavender essential oils for a fresh, plant-powered cleanse.

Clean Skin. Good Vibes. ✨

STEP 2 ✨ MOISTURIZE

Herbal Teen Face Moisturizer is a lightweight facial oil formulated to moisturize oily and acne-prone skin without a heavy, greasy feel.

The plant-based formula includes grape seed and jojoba oils, along with soothing botanicals such as chamomile and calendula.

Start with just a few drops—a little goes a long way.

Hydration. No Drama. ✨

Why an Oil for Oily Skin?

Putting facial oil on already-oily skin may sound counterintuitive. One of the most common assumptions about oily or acne-prone skin is that it needs to be “dried out.” But removing as much oil as possible isn’t the goal of a healthy skincare routine.

Our skin naturally produces sebum—an oily substance that helps lubricate and protect the skin. During puberty, hormonal changes can increase sebum production, which is one reason teens often notice more shine, clogged pores, and breakouts.

That doesn't mean oily skin doesn't need moisture.

In fact, repeatedly using harsh cleansers or skipping moisturizer because skin is oily can leave the skin feeling tight, dry, or irritated. A better approach is to cleanse away excess oil and everyday buildup and then follow with an appropriate moisturizer to help keep the skin feeling comfortable.

And when it comes to facial oils, not all oils are the same. Different plant oils have different fatty-acid profiles, textures, and weights on the skin, which is why ingredient selection matters.

Herbal Teen Face Moisturizer was formulated with lightweight plant oils selected specifically with oily and acne-prone skin in mind.

Grape seed oil is a lightweight, fast-absorbing oil naturally rich in linoleic acid, an omega-6 fatty acid. It provides moisture without the heavy feel teens may associate with traditional creams.

Jojoba oil is technically a liquid wax, and its composition is different from many traditional plant oils. It spreads easily over the skin and helps soften and moisturize without feeling overly heavy.

The formula also includes chamomile and calendula, botanicals traditionally used in skincare for their soothing and skin-conditioning properties.

Because facial oils are concentrated, a little goes a long way. Start with just 2–3 drops, gently press or massage them into clean, slightly damp skin, and give the product a moment to absorb.

It's also a great skincare lesson to learn early: more product isn't necessarily better. The goal isn't to overwhelm teen skin with products; it's to give it what it needs with a simple routine they can use consistently.

Building Good Skincare Habits Early

When teens first become interested in skincare, it's tempting to buy every cleanser, toner, serum, spot treatment, mask, and trending product they see online.

I prefer a different approach.

Start simple.

Use the routine consistently. Pay attention to how the skin responds before adding something new. And introduce new products one at a time so it's easier to identify what works—and what doesn't.

For most tweens and teens who are just beginning a skincare routine, establishing the habit of washing and moisturizing their face morning and night is a great foundation.

Cleanse. Moisturize. Done.

Skincare Teens Will Use. Ingredients Parents Can Feel Good About.

I wanted the Herbal Teen packaging and messaging to feel fun enough that teens would want it sitting on their bathroom counter, while still giving parents the ingredient transparency they expect from Kosmatology.

Like the rest of the Kosmatology philosophy, Herbal Teen is about thoughtfully formulated skincare without unnecessary complication.

The products are plant-based, MADE SAFE® Certified, and Leaping Bunny Certified, and contain no synthetic fragrance.

As both a pharmacist and a mom, I also want teens to understand that skincare isn't about achieving "perfect" skin. Oiliness and occasional breakouts are normal parts of adolescence.

A skincare routine should be about taking care of your skin—not chasing perfection.

Frequently Asked Questions About Teen Skincare

When Is It Time to See a Dermatologist?

A simple skincare routine is a great starting point, but cosmetic skincare products aren't a substitute for medical treatment.

If acne is persistent, painful, cystic, causing scarring, or affecting your teen's confidence or quality of life, talk with a dermatologist or other healthcare professional. There are effective treatments available, and there's no reason a teen should feel like they simply have to live with severe acne.
