The Benefits of Turmeric

IMG_0372.jpg

Turmeric is a culinary spice that is related to ginger.  It is mostly well-known for its bright orange-yellow color and use in curry.  Turmeric has many health benefits mostly related to the fact that it contains a substance called curcumin.  Curcumin is a powerful anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory.  There have been several studies showing that curcumin is just as effective as ibuprofen in relieving pain and inflammation.

How should you incorporate turmeric into your diet?  One of our favorite ways is a warm drink known as Golden Milk.

Golden Milk:  Makes 1 serving
2 cups of milk (almond, hemp, coconut, or dairy are all great choices)
1 tsp of turmeric
Pinch of black pepper (Black pepper contains piperine, a natural substance that increases absorption of curcumin by 2000%)

Optional:
1 tsp of maple or agave syrup to taste
½ tsp of cinnamon
¼ tsp of ginger
¼ tsp of vanilla extract

Directions:
1.    In a small saucepan, heat 2 cups of the milk of your choice.
2.    Once warm, add turmeric and black pepper. (and any additional spices you choose)
3.    Mix well.
4.    Add maple or agave syrup. (optional)

Pour into your favorite mug and enjoy!
