It’s Our Birthday — And Our Story Is Where It All Began

As I sit down to write this, I can hardly believe it has been five years since I started Kosmatology. I never imagined I would one day be the founder of a clean, gentle skincare line but looking back, the journey makes perfect sense.

Kosmatology didn’t start as a business idea.
It started as a mom trying to help her baby.

The Moment Everything Changed

When my youngest daughter Cameron was just three months old, she developed severe eczema. Her skin was red, irritated, and uncomfortable, and overnight my happy baby became fussy and miserable.

Like many parents, I started with the basics—changing laundry detergents, adjusting our routines, and trying everything I could think of. After several trips to the pediatrician, we were prescribed steroid creams.

As a compounding pharmacist, I understood both the benefits and the risks of long-term steroid use, especially in infants. I knew I needed to find another solution.

That’s when the research began.

I started studying eczema triggers, ingredient safety, and the skin barrier. I began formulating and experimenting, searching for something gentle, nourishing, and protective.

Eventually, I created what would become our very first product: the Goody-Goody Grapefruit Lotion Bar.

It worked better than I ever expected. Cameron’s skin improved quickly, and seeing her comfortable again was everything.

That moment changed my life.

From One Lotion Bar to a Skincare Line

Friends and family began asking for lotion bars for their children and for themselves. Word spread, and before I realized it, I was creating more products—lip balms, hand soaps, and gentle skincare designed with sensitive skin in mind.

My brother started jokingly calling my creations “Kosmatology,” a play on my maiden name, Kosma.

The name stuck.

What began as one lotion bar made at my kitchen counter slowly grew into a full line of gentle, plant-based skincare designed for families, sensitive skin, and anyone who wants simple, safe ingredients.

Why Gentle, Fragrance-Free Skincare Matters

Through my own family’s experience and through hearing from thousands of customers. I’ve learned that many people struggle with:

  • eczema

  • fragrance sensitivities

  • allergies

  • irritation from conventional products

That’s why we focus on formulas that support the skin barrier and avoid unnecessary irritants.

If you’re interested in learning more about common irritants in skincare, you can read our guide to ingredients to avoid in personal care products.

The Best Part of the Journey

Starting Kosmatology has allowed me to do something I love every single day. But the most meaningful part hasn’t been launching products or growing a business.

It has been hearing from customers whose children finally found relief, whose hands no longer crack from washing, or who can finally use skincare without irritation.

Those stories are why we do what we do.

Looking Ahead

Five years ago, I was simply trying to help my daughter’s skin heal.

Today, Kosmatology is a growing brand dedicated to gentle, effective skincare—and we are still guided by the same goal we had on day one:

To create products that are safe, simple, and kind to skin.

Thank you for being part of this journey. We truly couldn’t do it without you.

XOXO,

Janis Kosma-Covey, doctorate of pharmacy and mom. Worked as a compounding pharmacist for 15 years before developing an organic skincare line. When her daughter developed eczema at 3 months old, she was looking for clean, affordable products that wouldn't aggravate her daughter’s sensitive skin and would support it. Shocked by the lack of natural products available, she set out to create a line of skincare. Kosmatology was born and has been helping moms bring nourishing and non-toxic products to their families since 2014.
