Why Our Founder Made Our Bug Repellent Solid.

When most people think of bug repellent, they picture a spray.

But when I began formulating a natural mosquito repellent for Kosmatology, I quickly realized that sprays weren’t the best option especially for families with young children.

As a pharmacist and formulator, safety was my first priority. One concern that kept coming up was inhalation. Even if a bug repellent is safe to apply to the skin, that doesn’t necessarily mean it should be inhaled into the lungs.

Young children in particular cannot always hold their breath long enough to avoid inhaling aerosolized sprays. For that reason, I began exploring a different solution: a solid bug repellent balm.

A solid formula allows families to apply repellent directly to the skin without creating a cloud of spray in the air.

Why a Solid Natural Bug Repellent Works So Well

In addition to reducing inhalation concerns, solid bug repellents offer several practical advantages.

No Water Means Fewer Preservatives

Because the formula does not contain water, it does not require the same preservatives commonly used in liquid products. This allows for a simpler ingredient list while maintaining product stability.

Perfect for Travel and Outdoor Adventures

Solid bug repellents are also ideal for travel. Unlike liquid sprays, they will not leak or spill in your bag, backpack, or suitcase.

Coconut Oil Helps Repel Insects

Our formula also includes coconut oil, which has been studied for its potential insect-repelling properties. Coconut oil is sometimes used in natural mosquito repellent formulas because certain fatty acids have shown insect-repelling activity.

In a 2018 research article published in Scientific Reports, scientists from the USDA’s Agricultural Research Service identified specific coconut oil fatty acids including lauric acid, capric acid, and caprylic acid that demonstrated strong repellency and long-lasting effectiveness against multiple insect species.

In addition, coconut oil creates a smooth surface on the skin that may make it more difficult for mosquitoes to land.

How to Use Solid Bug Repellent

Using a balm-style repellent is simple and allows for targeted application.

1. Hold the balm to the skin briefly
The warmth of your skin softens the product slightly.

2. Apply to exposed skin
A few swipes across the front and back of the arms and legs are usually enough to protect the entire area. You do not need to apply it to every inch of exposed skin.

3. Protect the face safely
For the head and face, apply swipes to the forehead and neck area rather than directly on the face.

A Simpler Way to Enjoy the Outdoors

When I created this formula, my goal was simple: to make a natural mosquito repellent that families and kids could feel comfortable using outdoors without unnecessary ingredients or exposure to sprays.

A solid repellent allows for targeted application, easy travel, and simple ingredients making it a practical option for families who enjoy spending time outside.

Now you can enjoy the outdoors with confidence—and without the bugs.
